Hair Brush Cleaning Hacks: How to Remove Lint, Hair, and Product Build-Up

You have probably noticed how quickly hair brushes collect hair, lint, and product residue, even when they still look fairly clean on the surface. Over time, that build-up can make brushing less effective and can even end up being transferred back onto freshly washed hair. Cleaning your hair brush regularly does not need to be a big job, and a few simple habits can make a noticeable difference to how your hair looks and feels.

How to Remove Hair and Lint from a Hair Brush

The easiest time to clean a brush is little and often. Removing trapped hair after each use prevents it from tangling deeper into the bristles and mixing with product residue.

Start by pulling out loose hair using your fingers. For stubborn strands, a wide-tooth comb or the pointed end of a tail comb works well to lift hair away from the base of the brush. For lint and fine fibres, gently running a clean, dry toothbrush between the bristles can help dislodge anything that is caught.

If your brush has flexible bristles, avoid pulling too hard, as this can damage their shape. Taking a few extra seconds and working slowly helps keep the brush in good condition while still removing debris effectively.

How to Clean Product Build-Up Properly

Product build-up is often harder to see but can weigh hair down and affect how evenly products are applied. If your brush feels sticky, looks cloudy, or has a dull coating near the base of the bristles, it is time for a deeper clean.

Fill a bowl with warm water and add a small amount of gentle shampoo or mild soap. Avoid very hot water, especially for brushes with glue-set bases, as this can weaken the structure over time. Swirl the brush gently in the water, focusing on the bristles rather than soaking the handle.

Use a toothbrush to lightly scrub between the bristles and around the base where residue tends to collect. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, making sure no soap is left behind. Shake off excess water and leave the brush bristle-side down on a towel to air dry fully before using it again.

How often you need to do this depends on how much product you use. For most people, a proper clean every one to two weeks is enough to keep brushes fresh and working well.

Keeping your hair brush clean helps it perform properly and keeps dirt, oils, and old products away from your hair. A quick tidy after each use and an occasional deeper clean can help extend the life of your brush and make everyday styling feel that bit better!
